Turn on USB debugging on an Android phone
TestPod talks to an Android phone over USB debugging. Turn it on once on each phone, then allow the station when the phone asks.
The menu names below are the usual ones; some brands and Android versions name or place them a little differently.
- Unlock Developer options
Open Settings › About phone and tap Build number seven times. Enter the phone’s PIN if it asks. The phone says you are now a developer.
Samsung: Settings › About phone › Software information › Build number. Xiaomi: Settings › About phone, tap the OS version (or MIUI version) seven times. - Turn on USB debugging
Open Settings › System › Developer options (Samsung: Settings › Developer options, at the bottom of the list) and switch on USB debugging. Tap OK to confirm.
- Connect the phone and allow the station
Connect the phone to the station by USB and unlock its screen. The phone asks Allow USB debugging? Tick Always allow from this computer and tap Allow. The station then carries on by itself.
What the tile says
| Tile | What to do |
|---|---|
| Please enable USB Debugging on device! | USB debugging is off. Do steps 1 and 2 on the phone. |
| Please choose Allow USB debugging! | The phone is waiting for you. Unlock it and tap Allow (step 3). |
| Failed to allow USB debugging | The phone was not allowed. Unplug it, plug it in again and tap Allow. |
Problems
- The phone never asks “Allow USB debugging?”
- Unlock the screen and look again — the question only shows on an unlocked phone. Still nothing: in Developer options tap Revoke USB debugging authorizations, then unplug and plug the phone in again. Also try another cable: some cables only charge.
- I tapped Deny by mistake
- Unplug the phone and plug it in again. It asks again.
Still stuck?
